The racial makeup of the county was 76.57% White, 19.86% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 1.31% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. There were 248,443 housing units at an average density of 538 per square mile (208/km 2). The population density was 1,211 people per square mile (468 people/km 2).
